About JHIRA
Our Journey
In March 2018, we announced the launch of new research platform, and invited our colleagues around the world to join us in exploring the role of hemp (麻, “asa”) in traditional Japanese culture.
Foundation
In June 2019 our research took on a new urgency. At the dawn of the Reiwa (令和) era, climate change and the biodiversity crisis made our call to likeminded researchers more important than ever. Those who share an interest in understanding the cultural heritage of hemp plant, and how each localized tradition is related to the larger worldwide hemp narrative, are invited to contribute their research, write news articles, and join us in organizing events.
Our Mission
Hemp forms ancient connections between cultures worldwide and builds a bridge to our collective future.
JHIRA’s purpose is to share our appreciation of Japan’s hemp culture with the world, while bringing international hemp culture to Japan.
Our primary focus recognizes the Cannabis plant as a key member of our ecosystem, and to exploring the plethora of relationships with its fiber and seed.
